Virgin in the City

The idea came to me as I was watching an episode of Sex and the City.  I'm an avid fan of the show, impractical though it may be.  I mean what girl wouldn't want to be able to write newspaper columns as a side job, while their main job would be going out to five star restaurants and purchasing designer clothes.  Being a dreamer, New York lover, and English grad to boot, Sex and the City remains a fantasy, (ok ok the men are a part of the fantasy too)
But upon watching this fantasy like show it began to worry me; how many people (female and male) find this show to be realistic, at least on the dating side of things?  Let me tell you from a single gal's perspective, dating in real life is definitely not as glamorous, not as fun, and there is most certainly not as much sex involved.
This blog is meant to be several things, first and foremost being just a great tool to let me blow off steam, as I like being able to remain anonymous (keeping a diary never seemed to work for me) and it's also meant to give an inside glimpse on what dating is really like in the city, and that while Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte, and Samantha might be having sex, there's at least one virgin in the city I'm in, and yes it's me.
So there's the transition into the other purpose of this seemingly un-purposful blog, to tell other dating women that they are not alone in their desire of not wanting to jump in the sack right away, nor is it to judge others who do (too be honest I'm a tad jealous).  It's merely a ranting of situations that I've been in, what my friends have gone through, and even what this guy sitting behind me at a restaurant went through (yep I know, guilty of eavesdropping).  The hope is that someone can get a laugh and at least relate to a little bit of, not necessarily 'No Sex and the City', but 'A lot less Sex and the City and certainly a lot less of fabulous dating in the city'.  Doesn't really roll of the tongue well, but you get the picture.
Like every other virgin in their 20's, I've begun to wonder if I'm really the only one out there, if I'm a rare dodo bird, that everyone looks at in a museum and goes "Wow they really did exist!".
As I've explained to many people over the years, it has been a choice that has not been religiously influenced in the slightest (trust me, my friends can back me up on the fact that I'm about the least religious person they know).  People don't often believe me, so I then have to drudge open the fact that I've never been in a long-term relationship, which leads to a mixture of sympathy and horror on peoples faces.  They then go on to think that I've never been on a date, which I quickly, eager to at least say one positive thing about my dating life, say that I've been on plenty of dates and I rather do enjoy dating.
They then ask me what has happened, and why the dates haven't worked out, and I'm always back to the answer "Well....I wouldn't sleep with them".  Then oddly enough people get defensive and say "Well...I'm sure that's not the only reason".  I then look at them (especially my guy friends) and ask, "So it wouldn't bother you if you started dating someone and they didn't want to sleep with you for at least three or more months?"
To their credit they usually just change the subject.
